This summer school course on Advanced Materials explores the how’s and why’s of advanced materials in research and design. For example, how can we create novel materials, why does a certain structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales produce certain properties, and what lies behind such physics of materials? Advanced Materials will focus on both experimental and theoretical/computational research to answer these questions. The course is intended for undergraduate students in physics, chemistry, materials science, and related fields, from the second year on.
Advanced Materials provides theory lectures, lab tours with practical demonstrations of the research equipment, hands-on problem-solving sessions and group work projects carried out in the host laboratories. The course will finish with a one-day workshop where the participants will present and discuss their project reports with the course co-ordinators and supervising scientists from the host laboratories.
The course takes place at the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University. Aalto has a robust research profile and state-of-the-art infrastructure in materials research, hosting several Academy of Finland Centres of Excellence, the newly-opened Nanomicroscopy Centre and a number of research teams led by recipients of the prestigious European Research Council Grants.
The course has strong links to the Aalto Master’s Programme in Physics of Advanced Materials, which offers the course participants an opportunity to continue their studies at the MSc level and further as PhD students.
