Advanced Materials familiarizes participants in the research and design of advanced materials within the context of internationally high-level experimental and theoretical/computational research. The target group of the course is undergraduate students in physics, chemistry, materials science, and related fields, from the second year on.
The course consists of theory lectures, lab tours with practical demonstrations of the research equipment, hands-on problem solving sessions, and group work projects carried out in the host laboratories. The course will finish with a one-day workshop in which the participants will present and discuss their project reports with the course coordinators and supervising scientists from the host laboratories.
All course activities will take place at the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University. The university has a strong research profile and state-of-the-art infrastructure in the field of materials research. These include hosting several Academy Centres of Excellence, the newly-opened Nanomicroscopy Centre, and a number of research teams led by recipients of the prestigious European Research Council Grants.
The course is strongly linked to the Aalto Master programme in Physics of Advanced Materials (starting in autumn 2012), which offers an opportunity for the course participants to continue their studies at the M.Sc level and further as PhD students.
Please direct any questions concerning the content of this course to the coordinator, Dr. Emppu Salonen, emppu.salonen@helsinki.fi. Any questions on the general arrangements (accommodation, scholarship, etc.) should be addressed to the Summer School's office at summer-school@helsinki.fi.
