The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the following issues:

  • Why and how companies from less developed countries compete internationally;
  • How emerging market multinationals (EMNEs) organize their resources and capabilities to achieve competitive success in an international context;
  • What specific managerial approaches EMNEs use when entering and organizing activities in foreign countries;
  • Why EMNEs explore particular entry modes when going abroad;
  • What competitive strategies of EMNEs have resulted in successful internationalization.

Part 1. Internationalization: emerging economy perspective
Part 2. International strategies of EMNEs
Part 3. The rise of EMNEs from Russia, China and India

Assessment Methods and Criteria:
The course consists of lectures, in-class assignments, group exercises, case studies, and a learning diary.

32 h, Dr.Sc. (Econ) Irina Jormanainen and M.Sc. (Econ) Anna Salonen

The learning method will be interactive, focusing on discussion and creative participation. The course will include guest lectures by company executives to provide concrete insights into managerial practices of EMNEs. Students will also have in-class assignments, including an analysis of practical cases concerning internationalization of EMNEs and consideration of their strategic options.
